2012′s Holiday Pound Busters: Diets That Will Ensure a Fitter You

With countless celebrations and the most irresistible foods served, packing on the pounds is inevitable in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. In this span of time, most people drop their diets and indulge in the festive spreads, assuring themselves they'll lose the extra pounds right after. However, this is easier said than done.

Holiday nutrition can be one of the most challenging feats to accomplish. If you can maintain it, then your weight will be in control and you deserve congratulations for your iron-clad willpower; but if you give in to all the delicious holiday treats, then you can be sure that getting back on any diet will be even harder, if not impossible.

Whether or not you're able to keep away from the holiday temptations, be confident that the coming year will present a lot of opportunities to make amends for stuffing your tummy with, well… stuffing, among other things.

As early as now, there are a number of diets recognized to be some of the best for 2012. Here are some examples of diets you can consider as part of your New Year's resolutions:

The DASH Diet

Originally created to lower blood pressure and the risk of heart disease, the 28-day DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was also found to be an effective weight-loss regimen. This is attributed to the low-salt, whole food meal plans it requires people to follow. For example, instead of stuffing yourself with salty foods, you may have a sandwich with soup and veggies on the side, or a large salad with chicken, followed by a frozen yogurt sundae.

This diet is best for people with time to cook since it involves a number of recipes that will need kitchen work.

The Paleo Diet

Also called the Caveman Diet, The Paleolithic Diet is a modern dietary regimen that consists of foods presumed to be the main sources of nutrition during the Paleolithic era – or in short, caveman food. The general approach to this diet is to avoid processed foods, cereal grains, legumes, dairy products, refined sugars, and starchy veggies. Although not originally designed to be a weight-loss plan, the Paleo diet proves effective because it eliminates excess carbohydrates from your diet.

Meal plans include fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruits, roots, and nuts. What's more, this diet is naturally casein and gluten-free, making it a great choice for people with milk or wheat-based food allergies.

These are just two examples of the coming year's most recommended diets. So, lose that holiday gut and say hello to 2012 with a well-balanced dietary strategy for a healthier you!

Know any more diets we should watch out for this coming 2012? If you do, feel free to leave a comment – we'd love to hear from you!

Pumping Up the Volume: How Music Promotes Efficient Exercise

Whether you love hitting the gym, going for bike rides, or jogging outdoors, listening to music while working out significantly improves your exercise productivity. By creating the perfect mix of your favorite, upbeat songs and power tracks, you can actually feel more energized, allowing you to lift heavier, bike farther, or jog longer.

Based on an a studyconducted by researchers at California State University, Fullerton, people who workout with music are more engaged and motivated compared to those who don’t. Apparently, this is because athletes were able to distract themselves from feeling muscle fatigue,  hence allowing themselves to exert more effort without even feeling the difference.

If you exercise outdoors, bring your mp3 player to musically inspire you. If you're a gym rat, most fitness centers already play music in the exercise rooms. However, it would still be better if you brought your own choice of tunes. This way, you can customize your tracks, and make sure that you keep up a high level of energy.

Creating the Perfect Playlist

When it comes to making the perfect workout playlist, some people tend to turn technical and start talking about specific beats per minute (bpm). This can help if you've got the time and patience to understand it, but the easiest way to build an effective workout playlist is to simply load it up with tunes you love. After all, researchers do agree that motivational music differs from one person to another. If you are able to groove to the music, then you've got a good playlist.

You can also consider some all-time favorites or power songs to add to your workout playlist. Examples include tracks from the Rocky soundtracks, Black Sabbath's "Iron Man", and select Michael Jackson songs like "Beat It", "Thriller", and "Billie Jean". They're not a necessity, but adding them wouldn’t hurt. Combine these tracks with your favorite songs and you can bet on getting that energy boost you need when exercising.

You can even plan the playlist according to your exercise routine. For example, you can begin with songs ideal for warming up, followed by a faster set of tunes for the more intense parts of your program. Don't forget to end the session with the perfect cool down track. By following this, you may find yourself actually moving to the beat of your music – a sure sign that your playlist is working for you.

What songs are a must for you when you go out to exercise? Feel free to share your ideas – we'd love to hear from you!

10 Things We Learned About Rajon Rondo

Taking a cue from Rajon Rondo's Foot Locker commercials alone, Rajon Rondo is all about quickness. This really comes at no surprise though, point guards have always been known for outstanding ball-handling skills and directing the plays. Rondo himself is best known for quick assists, he earned his most assists in the 2009-10 season, he even landed himself a spot among the NBA All-Stars in 2010 and 2011.

Earlier this month, the professional basketball star and iRenew supporter, Rajon Rondo hosted a Facebook chat to promote the new Nike Hyperfuse sneakers for Foot Locker. Much like his character in the commercials, Rondo offered quick answers that went right to the point. Here are a few things we learned from him:

10. Basketball wasn't his first love. Rondo started playing basketball at 8, but before that, he was already playing football at 6.

9. Talented at a young age. He started doing dunks at 14 years old.

8. He's a loyal alum. As a University of Kentucky alumnus, he seems to really enjoy returning to and playing at his alma mater.

7. He's Humble. He believes that humility is a must to becoming a great player. He says this about the freshmen at the University of Kentucky.

6. Strength and Endurance are his motto's. Getting quick is a must for him. So over the summer, he's been doing lots of agility drills and working with a track coach.

5. He's a team player. As for his sick assists? He works on them by making more of them − helping his teammates get the best opportunities to make open shots.

4. He welcomes constructive criticism. In response to a little playful quip from President Obama, Rondo sure has been working on his jump shot.

3. Stay's true to his roots. His key to success? "The Good Lord and hard work," he says.

2. He remembers to relax. Although he was busy, he totally enjoyed the summer off-season.

1.  He's totally looking to bring the title home this year.

Faith, humility and hard work is what keeps Rajon staying strong in the game. Adding a dose of these into our own lifestyle would do us good in the way we manage things overall. Where you suprised by any of Rajon's responses?
